Guest Chef Event

Song Lee at Puro

Pablo Löhle, executive chef at the Mövenpick Hotel Basel, has made it his mission to invite an outstanding chef he has met during his career to Basel once a year. On one special weekend each year, guests at PURO can enjoy the culinary masterpieces of these chefs. For the second time, Song Lee, a master of modern Asian cuisine, will be wielding his chopsticks at PURO and enchanting guests with his unique creations.

The connection between Pablo Löhle and Song Lee dates back to their time together at the renowned restaurant ‘VOX’ at the Grand Hyatt Berlin. At that time, Löhle was head chef and Lee was a young apprentice from Korea who was starting his career in Germany. What began as a chef-apprentice relationship developed into a long-standing friendship.

From 28 to 30 May 2026, Song Lee will be cooking in Basel for the second time. Invited by Pablo, he will take over the PURO kitchen for three days.

Song Lee’s career

Song Lee was born and raised in Gangnam, a modern and vibrant district in Seoul. Gangnam is known worldwide for its first-class restaurants and clubs – an environment that probably shaped his decision to go into the restaurant business. But it wasn’t just his surroundings that inspired him to leave his homeland and train at the Grand Hyatt Berlin in Germany; it was also his deep curiosity about the diverse world of cuisine. At the VOX restaurant, he learned the art of sushi-making from the masters themselves.

In 2014, his path led him to the then newly opened restaurant DAE MON, where he began to creatively interpret his Korean roots and combine them with innovative ideas. This willingness to experiment and his own style earned him a nomination by Berlin’s master chefs as ‘Rising Star of the Year’ in 2015.

In 2016, he moved to Sticks’n’Sushi, a restaurant that combines Japanese tradition with Danish casualness. Here, Lee deepened his craft while exploring new, creative avenues. In 2019, he moved to the 5-star Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg as head chef, where he managed the Nikkei Nine restaurant. Three years later, he returned to Sticks’n’Sushi as Area Head Chef, taking responsibility for all three Berlin locations.

Today, at the age of 48, Song Lee is considered one of the best chefs in his field, whose unconventional career path has made him a sought-after guest chef on the international stage.
